The top duel between VfL Wolfsburg and Manchester United turned into an exchange of blows. In the end, the “she wolf” had the upper hand.
VfL Wolfsburg celebrates an important home win in the league phase of the Champions League. In the highest-scoring duel with Manchester United, “Wolves” ultimately won 5:2 (3:2). It was the British visitors who struck first and took the lead in the 14th minute through Fridolina Rolfö. However, through two goals from Ella Peddemors (17th, 37th minutes) and one goal from Lineth Beerensteyn in the 45th minute, Wolfsburg turned things around to 3-1. Before the break, United almost scored another goal through Melvine Malard (45th minute +2). Things calmed down in the second half. Beerensteyn with his second goal (65th minute) and Vivien Endemann (90th minute +6) brought the final score.
With this victory, Wolfsburg has now moved up to third place in the standings with nine points from four matches. However, the team from Autostadt had to worry about top striker and captain Alexandra Popp who had to be replaced in the 59th minute due to a knee injury.
In front of 3,817 fans at the Volkswagen Arena, things started well. First, Rolfö punished Wolfsburg’s sloppy defending with a header from close range. Peddemors then answered the Manchester goalkeeper’s bad pass with a beautiful shot from the edge of the penalty box. Safia Middleton-Patel also didn’t look good with Peddemors’ second goal from 25 metres.
Shortly before halftime, striker Berensteyn scored again from distance, but Malard quickly responded with a volley from his jump. Even without Popp, who was substituted with difficulty (59), VfL remained brave in the second half, Beerensteyn scored his fourth goal of the season in the Champions League, and substitute Endemann provided the finishing touch.
Wolfsburg will continue the league phase on December 9 and 17 with another impressive encounter. First there will be a guest appearance at Real Madrid, and finally FC Chelsea will travel to Lower Saxony.
