The city of Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) has extended the decree adopted last March aimed at prohibiting the possession, abuse and storage of nitrous oxide in public spaces, we learned on Wednesday, November 19, ICI Pays Basque (formerly France Bleu).
Since the start of 2025, the city’s police service has collected 143 canisters, or about fifteen canisters per month, mostly on the streets or building lobbies in Bayonne’s upscale neighborhoods. On the other hand, only one person was arrested in the city by city police for possession and consumption of nitrous oxide.
“This is a situation that concerns us, but is of little importance in Bayonne. There is still an increase, tubes are increasingly being found on public roads. You even have locals saying they found it in their gardens.“, said Christian Millet-Barbé, deputy mayor of Bayonne responsible for community peace, crime prevention and security.
