Separation, especially from children, is painful. Two moms and a dad talk about what they wish they knew before – and what they would do differently now.

We separated in the summer of 2023. Our son was three years old at the time. The breakup was to be expected, but I kept trying until the end to bring us back together. For example, I made an appointment with a couples therapist, and it was very painful. Because of my ex-partner, I became a person I didn’t want to be and didn’t know. Shortly before therapy there was an argument. He said he regretted having kids, so I punched him in the shoulder and it turned blue. I know that physical violence is impossible. I was very surprised at myself and immediately apologized. This only happened once.
