A man was killed and a 5-year-old child was seriously injured in a shooting in Martinique

A man was killed and a child was seriously injured by gunfire in Martinique on Wednesday evening while they were in a vehicle, we learned from police sources. The shooting occurred at around 20.00. (local time), in the Lamentin region (center of the island). A five year old child who was in the back of the vehicle was hit in the head and his life was threatened.

The boy was taken to the emergency room of the University Hospital of Martinique, the island’s fire and rescue service confirmed. About twenty 9 mm caliber shell casings were found around the bullet-riddled vehicle, sources close to the investigation said. Prosecutor’s representatives visited the location. The investigation was entrusted to the territorial judicial police service.

These deaths bring the number of homicides in Martinique to 33 since the start of 2025 compared to 29 in all of 2024. This is the 29th homicide with a firearm in the same period. In Martinique, as in Guadeloupe, authorities are concerned about the massive circulation of weapons motivated by drug trafficking.
