Formula 1 cars are scheduled to return to the streets of Las Vegas on Friday. However, currently the conditions there are very bad.

Days before the start of the Formula 1 weekend in the US metropolis of Las Vegas, the roads in the desert city were in poor condition. As various pictures and videos circulating on the Internet show, heavy rain has flooded several streets in the city in the US state of Nevada. The video by renowned Formula 1 photographer Kym Illmann also shows masses of water.

The Formula 1 race track traverses the streets of Las Vegas and also includes the famous “Strip” of the gambling metropolis. However, cars cannot drive on flooded roads. The first practice session for this weekend’s race is scheduled to take place on Friday German time, namely Thursday local time.

Larger bodies of water are a problem for Las Vegas because this desert city has good weather most of the year and therefore its sewage system is not as developed as in other cities.

According to a report in “Bild”, the person in charge of the racing series around Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali is still optimistic that the race weekend will go ahead as planned. Several other images also show the race track’s pitlane in good condition. The chance of rain will also be reduced during the race weekend.

The organization of the race is completely irrelevant from a sporting point of view: the two McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri and the defending champion Max Verstappen at Red Bull are still fighting a three-way battle for the drivers’ championship. Norris currently leads the standings with a 24 point advantage over Piastri. Verstappen is already quite far behind, 49 points behind. Las Vegas is the third to last race of the season ahead of weekends in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. There will also be a sprint race in Qatar. A maximum of 83 points is still available.
