Curious name change: Dublin Airport renamed Parrot | sport

Ireland is celebrating its new national hero in a strange way.

About background: Ireland’s World Cup chances are believed to be dead. In the final group match they trailed 1:2 against their direct rivals from Hungary shortly before the end. Only a win will take Ireland through to the play-offs.

Then came the big performance of Troy Parrott (23).

First, the Irishman equalized in the 80th minute to make it 2-2 – he also scored Ireland’s first goal. In the sixth minute of added time, the striker actually scored a goal with the last action to make it 3-2.

A hat-trick that left Ireland spellbound. And it needs to be celebrated in a big way.

In honor of the 23-year-old striker, Dublin International Airport posted an edited image on “X” (formerly Twitter) where the airport was quickly renamed “Troy Parrott International Airport”.

But that’s not enough!

This airport was later also renamed “X”. The airport can now be found on Twitter as “Troy Parrott International Airport 🦜” – complete with a parrot emoji, as Parrott’s last name means parrot in German.

Fans enthusiastically celebrated the campaign and declared: “Dublin Airport wins the Internet today.”

The excitement wasn’t the first viral stunt at the airport this football weekend.

After Hungary had to hand over their World Cup play-off ticket to Ireland, the airport posted a picture of 25-year-old Dominik Szoboszlai crying with the caption: “US early clearance. Some have it, some don’t.” (German: “Preliminary US permission. Some have it, some don’t.”).

The airport also teased people at the Portugal game a few days earlier.

As superstar Cristiano Ronaldo (40) arrived in the rainy capital, the account asked: “Something tells us he couldn’t be happier on his way home…”

As Ronaldo returned home from Portugal’s 2-0 defeat to Ireland, the airport posted another image and wrote:

“Thanks to Nathan Collins for taking Cristiano Ronaldo to the airport this morning. Ronaldo was removed from his bag just after 10am, went through security and was on the plane back to Portugal at 10.15am. Departed in style. Second time on this trip.”

What they mean is Irish center back Nathan Collins who defended Ronaldo firmly. And the superstar’s famous red card.
