In 2024, the number of suicides or suicide attempts due to abuse perpetrated by partners or ex-partners will increase by 17% compared to 2023, France Inter learned on Thursday, November 20 from the Inter-Ministerial Mission for the Protection of Women from Violence and the Eradication of Human Trafficking (Miprof).

In detail, the National Observatory on Violence Against Women revealed in its annual letter that 906 women victims of abuse by their partners committed suicide or attempted suicide in 2024. “These are only registered victims”determine the report. As a reminder, forced suicide is a new offense born out of Grenelle’s 2019 domestic violence offense which was included in the law in 2020.

The total number of women who are victims of direct femicide attempts on partners in 2024 will be 107 people, in 2023 there will be 96 people. Miprof also noted that there were 270 victims of attempted femicide in 2024. In total, in 2024 there were 1,283 women who were victims or attempted murder of femicide, either directly or indirectly, compared to 1,196 people in 2023.

The National Observatory on Violence Against Women revealed other data, especially the number of children orphaned after the couple’s murder: in 2024, the figure was 94. “Since 2011, 1,473 children have become orphans from their mothers and/or fathers due to murder or homicide committed directly by their parents’ partners.” and/or follow “from suicide attacker”, we can read about it in this annual letter.

We also know that 58% of women will be murdered by 2024 “killed by one of his family members or (former) partner”compared to 13% in men. Additionally, in cases where a woman killed her partner or former partner, it appears that in more than half of cases, the woman had experienced violence in the past by 2024.
