Raquel came into the world on Wednesday evening on the threshold of the building where her parents live, in the Retiro neighborhood of Madrid. The mother, whose water had broken just minutes earlier, was walking with her partner to the hospital when labor contractions prevented her from continuing. The baby was born around 8.15pm. without the help of any professional. When emergency services arrived, they just had to cut the umbilical cord and place them skin-to-skin.
Samur PC troops carried the mother and daughter on stretchers down the final steps of the portal, which they were unable to clear in time. “She was shocked,” the woman is heard saying in a video shared by Emergencies Madrid, referring to her father’s reaction when his wife lay down on the first step to give birth.
The little girl and her mother, 27 years old and who had already had another child, were transferred in good condition to the Gregorio Marañón hospital, escorted by the Municipal Police to ensure a safe journey while they continued to treat both of them in the ambulance.
According to Arturo de Blas, head of the Samur PC guard, the child had “a good appearance and an excellent complexion”. He specified that the placenta was released during the transfer.
