A meeting is scheduled for Friday at the White House between Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani, candidate for mayor of New York

A meeting is scheduled for Friday November 21 at the White House, in Washington, between US President Donald Trump and Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York (not yet in office). The meeting was announced by Trump, who said Mamdani asked him to do so. Mamdani’s spokesperson said the main topics discussed were managing public safety and economic hardship for New Yorkers.

In recent weeks, the two have exchanged criticism several times: Mamdani is the most left-wing member of the Democratic Party, and Trump has moved the Republican Party to the radical right on many fronts. Mamdani especially criticized Trump for his rigid stance on immigration, while Trump frequently referred to him as a “communist” (in fact Mamdani defined himself as a socialist) and threatened to withdraw funds the federal government provided to the city of New York if he became mayor.

Mamdani is 34 and will take office on January 1, after defeating two other candidates in the November election, including Andrew Cuomo, who Trump supports.
