The US and Russia may have developed a plan to end Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The reactions vary.
Ukraine is under pressure from a peace plan allegedly negotiated in secret with Moscow by the US leadership. Internationally, there are differences of opinion regarding plans for peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
Head of the Chancellor Thorsten Frei (CDU) criticized: “It seems that Putin could achieve war goals that he did not achieve on the battlefield. And that would certainly be an unacceptable result,” Frei said on the RTL/ntv program “Frühstart”. “The first news reports you see about this are quite disturbing.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs Johann Wadephul On the other hand, it welcomes any initiative that could lead to a ceasefire in Ukraine and subsequent peace negotiations. A prerequisite for this is the involvement of the government in Kiev as well as European countries as a whole, Wadephul said as he arrived at a ministerial meeting in Brussels with a view to taking up the latest US steps.
The EU is demanding something similar. “For this plan to succeed, support from Ukraine and Europe is needed,” said the EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. The Polish government was more critical. Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski said before meeting his EU counterparts in Brussels: Europe hopes to be consulted on any peace plan because Europe’s security is at stake. Moreover, Ukraine’s defense capabilities should not be limited. “I hope that it is not the victim who is placed in a position to limit his ability to defend himself, but rather the aggressor.”
So far there has been no immediate reaction from Ukraine to the American-Russian plan. president Volodymyr Zelensky However, Trump asked him to seek a just peace. “Only President Trump and the US have enough power to end this war,” he wrote on social media.
That White House declined to comment. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on the Kremlin Platform spokesperson Dmitry Peskov As an initial reaction, he simply said that nothing new was announced in this matter. He declined to comment on whether President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the details of the reported plan.
French Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Noel Barrot warned that the peace plan should not amount to a “surrender” to Russian President Vladimir Putin. United Kingdom Meanwhile, stated that they have the same goal as US President Donald Trump to end the war. Russia could end it tomorrow by withdrawing its troops, a Foreign Ministry spokesman in London said.
