Traffic: snowfalls complicate traffic in the north of the Peninsula | Spain

There are 19 roads affected by snow in Asturias, Cantabria, Burgos, León, Huesca and Navarra, according to what the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) reports in a message distributed through its social networks. Traffic asks motorists to be cautious, to wear winter tires or chains and to check the weather forecast and the state of the roads before starting a journey in the northern provinces of the Peninsula, as snowfall is expected in the northern area which could cause serious traffic problems and road closures in Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Navarra, north and east of Castilla y León and Huesca.

Specifically, there is a road closed to traffic (NA-137) in Izaba, Navarra, 12 on which the use of chains is mandatory: five in Asturias (AS-112 in Puerto de San Isidro, AS-117 in Tarna, AS-213 in Puerto Leitariegos, AS-227 in Puerto de Somiedo and AS-229 in Puerto de Ventana), four in Cantabria (CA-280 in Saja, CA-631 in Pandillo, CA-633 in San Pedro del Romeral and CA-643 in Valdicio), three in Burgos (BU-570 in Puerto de las Estacas de Trueba, BU-571 in Portillo de la Sía and BU-572 in Puerto de Lunada). The others, such as the AP-66 which passes through El Moclín (Asturias), are traveled with caution and access to some is prohibited to trucks.

The report from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) includes up to seven communities in the north of the peninsula on snow warning with Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y León at orange alert level due to significant risk. The biggest snowfall problems are expected to occur in the late hours of this Thursday and Friday morning. The DGT provides a list of motorways and expressways that could be affected by snow: the AP-66 (Asturias and León), the N-630 (Asturias-León), the N-621 (Cantabria-León), the A-67 (Cantabria), the AP-68 (Bilbao-Zaragoza), the AP-1 (Burgos-Irun) and the A-15 (Navarre).

The DGT also recalled the need, if you intend to drive in areas characterized by heavy snowfall, to equip yourself with all-weather winter tyres, or chains if their use is necessary. To find out about the state of the roads you can contact the usual Traffic channels on their social networks: on its website www.dgt.es and by calling 011. They are also available to traffic information providers (navigators) at the national traffic information access point (https://nap.dgt.es/).
