Bamberg: Strong smell at construction site – police warn residents

That POLICE has asked residents in Bamberg to close windows and doors due to a chemical leak at a construction site. During excavation work at the grounds of the Prosecutor General’s Office, workers discovered several containers containing chlorosulfonic acid, a police spokesman said.

One of the bottles broke and emitted a sharp, irritating odor. There were more undamaged bottles in the hole in the ground. A specialist ammunition disposal company is in operation. Therefore, the area is notorious for contaminated munitions in the ground.

The area was extensively cordoned off

Chlorosulfonic acid is a colorless liquid, has a strong odor, and emits a lot of smoke when exposed to air. For example, in the military sector to produce acid mist.

Police have cordoned off a large area. Apart from rescue workers, the city’s environmental department was also at the scene. Police also issued a warning to residents: windows and doors should remain closed as a precaution, open fires should be avoided, and buildings should not be abandoned.
