A 24-year-old prisoner who was injured last week in a standoff at Como prison committed suicide.
The young man was found hanged last night in his cell, where he had returned after being released from Sant’Anna hospital due to severe trauma to the chest.
During the uprising, according to what has been reconstructed, he had attacked a correctional officer, causing his nasal septum to be broken by a blow, then he tried to get through the bars of the gate and remained trapped there.
Como prison ranks at the top in terms of prison density in Italy. The latest available data, from last July, recorded an attendance of 424 inmates compared to a remaining capacity of 265. Last November 13, three prison police officers were injured while restoring calm inside the prison. Tensions began in the morning, when it appeared a prisoner was also trying to escape and an officer, chased by several rioters, was forced to lock himself in a box. The building was surrounded by police and by evening the situation in the section was back under control.
What happened “was resolved in a very short time, thanks to the timely and effective intervention of the Penitentiary Police staff, who acted immediately, so that the situation was brought back under control without further critical problems” announced the Department of Penitentiary Administration. “The prison system continues to be in a very serious state of emergency”, is the position of the prison police union.
