UN climate conference in Belem: fires disrupt negotiations

Fire disrupts World Climate Conference negotiations in Brazil. In the afternoon (local time) a fire broke out in one of the large tents where the negotiations were taking place. Security forces cleared most of the conference site.

Several minutes later, Brazilian organizers announced that the fire had been extinguished. No injuries.

Most of the negotiations were actually supposed to take place in the afternoon. This has recently stopped. Disagreements between countries include the question of how progress in adapting to climate change can be measured. It is also controversial whether the conference should decide that all countries should stop burning coal, oil and gas.
