The fire broke out on Thursday at the World Climate Conference in Belem. Participants must be taken to a safe place. Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly, but the damage remains.
Large fire in the entrance area near the country pavilion
According to consistent reports from AFP and the German Press Agency, thick smoke initially billowed from one of the large tents in Zone B of the vast conference area. Eyewitnesses, including several journalists, observed large flames in the entrance area near the village pavilion.
Videos and photos on Platform X showed the extent of the fire and people running in panic. Security forces used fire extinguishers while sirens and the roar of helicopters could be heard. The evacuation of the location was also confirmed by several delegations.
The affected buildings were damaged
Brazilian Tourism Minister Helder Barbalho said firefighters arrived quickly at the scene. However, the affected buildings were damaged. Returning participants will take several hours due to required security checks and cleaning.
Possible cause: short circuit
There is currently no official information regarding the cause of the fire. However, local media reported, citing initial estimates, that a short circuit could have caused the fire. As a result of this incident, there was a power outage in the affected pavilions.
The World Climate Conference is in its final stages and is scheduled to end on Friday after two weeks of intensive negotiations. When the fire broke out, many state and government representatives were at the scene. It is currently unclear whether there will be any delays in the process due to the fire.
