Today is an important day for 55 thousand aspiring doctors: the first exams are held after the ‘filter’ or ‘open’ semester that starts in early September. 87% of those who attended lessons – in person, remotely or hybrid – registered for the exam. Three subjects to tackle: Chemistry, Physics and Biology. The examining commission will start correcting assignments in the next few hours and the first exam results will be published on the Universitaly platform by December 3. Each student has 48 hours to accept the results or reject them. The second application will be held on December 10: registration will open from November 21 and will remain active until 23.59 on December 6.
Minister
“I would like to congratulate all the students who today face the first exam of the open semester – said Minister Anna Maria Bernini -. You study, you practice, you test yourself at the University: this is a real change of pace that we wanted to introduce, and it is already a reality. It is a complex, new and demanding test, which the university system faces and overcomes with professionalism and seriousness. Today we have shown that the open semester works”. For this school year, one in 2.7 students will have a chance of success; from 2023-2024 the number of enrollment places has increased from a total of 17,228 to the current 19,757 (24,000 if the availability of non-state universities is also taken into account). “Those who yesterday protested against the medical entrance exams – said the minister in the morning, in a post on social media – are today attacking the open semester: a system that trains inside universities, not outside, that multiplies opportunities and guarantees everyone a truly equal starting point. Not a noisy minority that will disrupt the exams of 55 thousand girls and boys who have studied seriously and committed for months to this appointment.” The students in question are Uds and Cambiare Rotta, as well as Flc Cgil, who also oppose the reform of access to medicine through flash mobs and demonstrations.
Protest
“The semester filter is detrimental to the health of the training system and students. It is not a mechanism that helps those who aspire to become doctors, but instead adds uncertainty, stress and inequality,” said the student. The Students’ Union has prepared a warning addressed to the more than 55,000 participants asking that everyone be allowed to enter “and that action be taken if there are any irregularities on the route”. Comments from the Chancellor’s Conference were also positive. “The first applications – said the president of Crui, Laura Ramaciotti – were carried out regularly and the universities demonstrated high efficiency. The way in which the tests were carried out confirms the validity of the access reform, which overcomes a complex system and introduces criteria capable of really improving the achievements of our students. I received confirmation from the chancellors of the good progress in all institutions”.
