In one lecture hall at Sciences Po in Paris in late October, around sixty students were discussing in small groups and writing down their ideas on sticky notes: “Include a wider variety of actors”, “limiting the presence of lobbyists at the COP”. Then they return the results of their exchange into the microphone. “We must democratize solutions, giving a voice to those who take action, showing that all is not lost”said one of the young people. So many defend against lack of time, misinformation, conflict of interest or feelings of helplessness. “How can we have this discussion outside of privileged schools? »asked another, aware of the interpersonal relationships that existed among these French elites.
This is the overall aim of the global citizens’ meeting for climate, an initiative officially launched at COP30 in Belém (Brazil), Thursday, November 20. Modeled on the French citizens’ climate convention, the initiative aims to engage people in all countries to try to find solutions to the climate crisis and influence political decisions. The project, which raised 3 million euros in funding, was launched at the end of 2024 by Iswe, an international association that aims to integrate populations into governance systems, with partners such as Brazil, Vanuatu, the European Climate Foundation and universities.
