Tension between Nicecivil aviation authority, e Gesak, Capodichino manager, on the timing of the airport’s closure in November 2026 for runway resurfacing: Enac, in a statement – warned that the closure “must be carried out byInstitutions (Enac, ed) at the end of the initial evaluation of this intervention executive project. At the moment – ENAC notes – the project has not been sent to the Authority for approval”. «Gesac proved a failure in the presentation of the executive project – said Enac president Pierluigi Di Palma – As emphasized several times, we want to limit the days of airport closures as much as possible to protect travelers and reduce inconvenience, to ensure citizens make full use of their mobility rights and operators to minimize the impact on the activities of their companies». Gesac’s response shortly afterwards was that he “did not see any failure to comply”.
The issue is technical and the timing is determined by public works law. «Manager – written in Gesac’s notes – made Technical-economic feasibility project (Pfte) for integrated procurement, also based on time and stage indications received from Enac. Pfte, approved by ENAC on October 24, 2025, is a tool containing technical, economic and executive characteristics that allows correct planning of work and provides execution of work for 54 days, of them 24 with total airport closure, after reducing bad weather conditions. The executive project, along with the implementation of the work, was entrusted through a tender procedure with a total value of 19.4 million euros. This – the note continues – will include the contents of the Pfte which, according to ENAC indications, will take into account the hypothesis of the organization of the construction site, the allocation of resources and the sequence of works, such as to further optimize the implementation time. Taking into account Enac’s approval of the technical-economic feasibility study, Gesac, also responding to the numerous requests for clarification – continues the note – coming from operators in the sector, in particular from airlines, which must plan their activities in advance, considers it necessary to communicate the scheduled timing of the closure of the airport, estimated from 1 to 30 November 2026, according to the indications received from Enac during the Pfte approval process”.

Time
Like all “just in time” infrastructure, Capodichino must periodically undergo “deep rebuilding.” The last time this was done was in 2006. A “deep rebuild” means that the asphalt surface of the runway will be removed and replaced with new, more modern, higher-performance asphalt. Beyond that, it will happen almost completely the luminous visual assistance system has been renovated (AVL)” for aircraft using LED lights, the runway drainage system has been adjusted, the connections have been improved and the curves have been modified to make it easier. Some intervention at the airport is also not excluded. It is worth remembering that Gesac initially wanted to close the airport to carry out the work from January 19 to March 1 2026, considering that this is the period that historically has the least number of flights and passengers. A proposal that met with resistance in particular from Atitech, the company that handles aircraft maintenance, and which has its own system within the airport space and uses the runway. Share Atitech, the period indicated by Gesac intercepts one of the busiest periods for maintenance So – with ENAC’s “pilotage” – closure is set for November 2026.
The date
So how many days is it closed? Misunderstandings arise from the definition of working days and closed days. There are 54 days to complete the work, those who closed runway (and flight operations) 24. The work being carried out is not only on the runway, but also on the connection (which can be used as an alternative when work is carried out even at night) and the terminal.
Capodichino Airport, Wizz Air inaugurates the Naples-Craiova route: new connection with Romania
This case arises from communications that Gesac sent to the entire airport community and, in particular, to the companies that have made plans for the winter season 2026/2027 and to commercial companies to activate the necessary organizational measures. And the lack of executive projects? Gesac recently completed a tender worth almost 20 million euros for work on the track. The tender was awarded to the company Adr Infrastructure from Rome Airport Group. Since this is an integrated contract, the executive project will be determined after the work is handed over to the contracting company (which according to regulations can also choose the designer).
