Wealthy foreigners are said to have shot people during the siege of Sarajevo. A journalist wanted to prove that Serbian President Vučić was also there.

An Italian court is investigating an alleged weekend trip taken by a wealthy foreigner during the siege of Sarajevo who is said to have shot defenseless civilians there. Now Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić is also accused of being there.

As reported by the Italian news agency Ansa, Croatian journalist Domagoj Margetic has filed a complaint with a court in Milan. He accused Vučić of being on the scene of a “sniper safari” in the 1990s. The city of Sarajevo in Bosnia was under siege by Serbian troops at the time.

The investigation in Milan was based on evidence presented by Italian writer Ezio Gavazzeni. He said that a former Bosnian intelligence officer had given him information about Italian gunmen who, in exchange for large sums of money, shot people in the besieged city. The defendant is said to have traveled from Milan, Turin and Trieste via Belgrade to Bosnia between 1993 and 1995, supported by part of the Serb army. According to investigators, they were taken by helicopter or vehicle to the hills around Sarajevo – where the city was terrorized by snipers.

According to Margetic’s research, the Serbian president is said to have served as a young volunteer at one of the military posts where foreigners entering the country opened fire on local residents as a “weekend sniper”. “There is no doubt that Vučić was in the Jewish cemetery in 1992 and 1993, which is the most exclusive and expensive location for foreign shooters,” the British Times quoted the journalist as saying.

Margetic wanted proof that Vučić, now 55, was part of the militia under the command of Slavko Aleksić. The president himself said in an interview in 1994 that he fought as a volunteer at Jewish cemeteries. According to Margetic, Aleksić’s commander confirmed in 2017 that Vučić was a member of the unit. “Aleksić neither confirmed nor denied that the ‘safari’ took place, but he said that Vučić translated for the foreigners when they arrived,” the journalist said.
