Federal situation report: Violence against women rises: Hubig announces reforms

After the introduction of electronic ankle bracelets decided by the cabinet, the Federal Minister of Justice plans Stefanie Hubig further reforms to better protect women from violence perpetrated by partners, ex-partners, and strangers. “The figures from the Federal Criminal Police Office show a very bitter truth about our country: cases of domestic violence are increasing,” the SPD politician told the German Press Agency.

A significant increase occurred last year. “In a five-year comparison, we see a sharp increase of around 18 percent,” he added. The majority of victims of domestic violence are women.

The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) will present the federal situation reports “Domestic Violence 2024” and “Gender-Specific Crimes Against Women 2024” at a press conference in Berlin this Friday. The BKA published its latest figures for 2024 on domestic violence in August. Thus, there are more than 187,000 women victims of domestic violence who are known to the police. A total of 266,000 people were affected, more than before.

Acts using knockout drop

“We must do more to protect women – domestic violence is not destiny,” Hubig stressed. Therefore, the implementation of electronic residence monitoring (ankle bracelets) for violent criminals, which the Federal Cabinet decided on Wednesday, will be just one of many measures. There are also plans to tighten criminal laws, for example in rape cases using the knockout drop method. At the same time, protection for victims must be strengthened.

Those affected by domestic violence should also be given the right to expert psychosocial support throughout the process. “I will soon present a draft law on this matter,” the Minister of Justice announced. Women must feel safe at home and can move freely in public spaces just like men.
