Environmental policy: nuclear waste final storage facility – forum discusses location search

The search for solutions for long-term storage of highly radioactive waste will be the focus of the fourth final storage forum in Hanover starting on Friday. This annual meeting is a forum for exchanging information between members of the community, civil society, authorities, politics, science and interested city governments. The current status of the final repository search as well as oversight of the selection process will be discussed.

In early November, the experts in charge narrowed down the suitable areas to 25 percent of all German states. The geological conditions there are suitable for underground storage from a current perspective or have not yet been assessed, said the Federal Society for Final Storage (BGE) in Peine, Lower Saxony.

Especially in northern Germany, most of the present is still present for a later date Final storage facility question – but there are also possible locations in the south.
