A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was recorded at 10.38 local time (5.38 in Italy) in Bangladesh.
According to data from the US geological service USGS and the Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the earthquake had a hypocenter 15 kilometers deep and an epicenter about 30 kilometers northeast of the capital Dhaka. So far there have been no recorded casualties, but according to USGS estimates, there may be many.
Panic also occurred in the Indian city of Calcutta and surrounding districts due to the earthquake which lasted about thirty seconds according to witnesses. Many people took to the streets leaving their homes, offices and schools.
