According to WDR, a police patrol discovered the fire. It is still unclear whether the cultural monument can still be saved. The castle was built as a defensive structure and served as the residence of the important Hardenberg family. It was first mentioned in a document in 1354.

City of Velbert (North Rhine-Westphalia) purchased the property in 1939. Both the castle and its precious casemate are currently being renovated, according to the city’s website. “The entire Hardenberg Castle area will be transformed into a nature experience center by 2026,” he said. It remains unclear whether construction work caused the fire.
