Miguel Tellado is the shadow man for almost all the hard, dark and complex work that Alberto Núñez Feijóo requires within the PP. The general secretary of the popular parties, however, always keeps a smile in all his interviews. A grimace of implacable humour, as he fools everyone in front of him with his arguments, often vulgar and with expletives. This Friday Tellado was smiling a lot.
The news of the conviction of the state attorney general by the Supreme Court raised the morale of the population. And Tellado gave an interview on the program The time of 1 of TVE, the public channel, an entity that the PP considers an information apparatus at the service of Pedro Sánchez. Genoa’s number two gave his all. Also against the journalist and presenter of the program, Silvia Intxaurrondo:
−TVE attacks the judiciary. Today is a very difficult day for TVE.
Tellado, a 51-year-old Galician, began with a direct criticism of the Sánchez government and the attorney general Álvaro García Ortiz. “We are faced with the political responsibility of whoever appointed him and whoever retained him. That is, the president of the government. The public prosecutor is a criminal. The PP doesn’t say so, the Supreme Court says so.” Seconds later, it began its direct attack on TVE.
“It worries me enormously – he observed – that from a public channel, paid for with the taxes of all Spaniards, there is talk of a judicial coup d’état. It is an absolute irresponsibility that no democrat can maintain. This cannot happen in a democracy. It is an exercise in political use of public media. Public television is used to attack the judiciary. What kind of democracy are we in? They should do a very in-depth analysis of what happens in this information body, an information body with which the Spaniards pay.” their taxes, when they pay taxes every day. It is extremely serious that you (referring to the presenter) allowed talk of a light blow, as if of respect for the judiciary. What happens in these media is very serious, Mrs. Intxaurrondo.
Tellado was referring to an opinion expressed during the political meeting. Intxaurrondo, surprised by this attack, used irony to respond to the strongman of Feijóo. “Your opinion is very interesting. I will write it down, of course.” Tellado immediately responded: “You yourself used this opinion. Respect judicial decisions, please.” Journalist Intxaurrondo denied having said those words. Tellado was referring to a manifesto signed in 2024 by thousands of people, including the journalist, against the “judicial and media coup”.
Intxaurrondo then asked Tellado whether the PP controls the second chamber of the Supreme Court “from behind.” The presenter questioned Feijóo’s number two on the words of the PP spokesperson in the Senate in 2018, who in a private chat with his colleagues (later made public) celebrated the distribution of the General Council of the Judiciary between PSOE and PP: “It was a great move. We will control the second room from the back.” The second chamber is the one that judged the state attorney general.
Tellado laughed. “Huh.” And it continued. “It’s manipulation of the first level. It’s a way out of the reproach I give you. The Supreme Court doesn’t follow anyone’s instructions. Believe me, the magistrates respect the law and apply it.” The journalist insisted. “So they don’t check?” The number two of the PP said no. “I would like to have a television that doesn’t manipulate.” Intxaurrondo asked the question for the third time.
−Then why did Senator Cosidó say this?
− You will have to ask the senator. I can’t give you an answer.
Tellado continued with the attack on TVE. “I would like everyone to respect the sentence. I have the feeling that public television is manipulating it.” The interview, which lasted just over 10 minutes, ended with the question of when the PP leaders became aware of the alleged tax crime of more than 350,000 euros by President Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s partner, Alberto González Amador.
Tellado said this issue is “sexist.” “The president’s partner,” he continued, “must be treated as a private citizen, because she is. Ayuso is not responsible for her private activity.” Intxaurrondo backed away again. “I thank you again for your defense of women against machismo.” And the general secretary of the popular parties, ironically, fired his last bullet at TVE:
− I understand that it is a difficult day for TVE.
