White Christmas in Hamburg? The odds are better than average. Expert Dominik Jung gives the current festival possibilities.

For years, the people of Hamburg had to make do with the typical gray color of Northern Germany. However, there are signs of minor changes to the 2025 probabilities, as current assessments suggest.

“This year the signs are a little more favorable for a white Christmas than average, mainly due to somewhat cooler weather conditions,” weather expert Dominik Jung told the t-online editorial team in Hamburg.

In particular, qualified meteorologists estimate the probability of a blanket of snow over the Hanseatic city in the days from December 24 to 26 at 15 percent.

This puts Hamburg on a par with Bremen and West German cities such as Düsseldorf. When compared nationally, the outlook in the north is still more cautious than in the south – in Munich the figure is 30 percent, and Berlin also performs better at 20 percent. However, the value has increased slightly compared to previous years which were often very light.

Although there are “better signs,” Jung cautions against over-anticipating. The overall assessment remains modest: “The odds this year are slightly higher than usual – but still low,” the expert continued.

The reason for this reluctance: Long-term trends suggest that winter overall may be “somewhat normal to a little too mild.” It remains to be seen whether the cold wave will reach the Elbe in time for the festival – but 15 percent is at least a glimmer of hope for all winter fans.
