Berlin – Increasingly, the most important means of transportation in Germany is simply the car. A new mobility study conducted by the Federal Ministry of Transport shows: Almost half of all cars are not driven at all on a typical day. In 2008 it was still a third of the number of vehicles.

Daily car use continues to decline. This is demonstrated by the study “Mobility in Germany”, carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Pedestrian traffic increases

But there have also been positive developments: pedestrian traffic has become more important. And: According to the survey, electric cars are now being used in a similar way to combustion engines. The kilometers traveled annually and the individual route lengths per trip are almost the same.

2017 is Electric car still purely a short-distance vehicle. Currently a greater proportion of journeys are e-Car by 13 percent, almost the same as combustion-fueled vehicles.

More than 421,000 people were surveyed

Research basis: national survey of more than 1000 cities and towns on daily traffic behavior. From May 2023 to June 2024, more than 218,000 households with around 421,000 people took part. The survey was conducted in 2002, 2008 and 2017.
