Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has landed in Johannesburg, where she will participate in the G20 leaders’ summit tomorrow and Sunday. After leaving Rome in the evening, the Italian delegation’s state plane, which generally requires a technical stopover over long distances, stopped for about an hour at Sigonella military airport, then departed for South Africa.
Meloni and the Italian delegation were welcomed at Johannesburg international airport by South Africa’s Deputy Minister for the Presidency, Nonceba Mhlauli, and by the Italian Ambassador in Pretoria, Alberto Vecchi.
The Prime Minister spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz by telephone “for an exchange of initial assessments regarding the American peace proposal for Ukraine”. This was reported in a note from Palazzo Chigi, which explained that “during the meeting, the importance of supporting the ongoing negotiation efforts was underlined and the ultimate goal of achieving a just and lasting peace, in the interests of all Europe, was reaffirmed”.
In the conversation between Meloni and Merz, “references to solid security guarantees, which are an integral part of the broader European and transatlantic stability framework, are welcome, in line with what Italy has long proposed,” the note underlined. “Other elements of the plan – explained – were deemed worthy of further study”.
