Bundesliga, matchday 11 – Friday: Mainz picked up a point against Hoffenheim

1. FSV Mainz 05 – TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 1:1 (0:1)

That TSG Hoffenheim missed out on a fifth straight win in the Bundesliga. Coach Christian Ilzer’s team scored 1-1 (1-0) at the start of the eleventh matchday at FSV Mainz 05. This placed TSG in fifth place with 20 points, while Mainz was second to last with only six points.

Andreas Hanche-Olsen’s own header (9th minute) caused an early deficit for Mainz, who have not won the last seven games. After receiving a cross from Wouter Burger, Hanche-Olsen fired a shot into his own goal from a distance of around 14 meters. Apart from one shot from Fisnik Asllani (15), Hoffenheim barely got off a shot.

Hoffenheim captain Oliver Baumann celebrates his 500th Bundesliga match. It means a lot, a lot to me,” he told broadcasters after the game Sky. “I would have loved to win today.”

After the break, Benedict Hollerbach (55) and soon after Phillipp Mwene (58) missed two chances to score, but TSG also missed the chance to make an early decision. Substitute da Costa finally secured a point for the hosts with his goal (76).

Shortly before the match ended, Mainz player Dominik Kohr received a red card for a foul on Max Moerstedt in the 88th minute. He set a Bundesliga record with his ninth career dismissal. “Definitely a red card,” said Mainz captain Nadiem Amiri after the final whistle sounded. ‘The Dome scene isn’t as smart as him.’

At the match, fans protested against security measures planned by politicians at German stadiums. The posters included slogans such as “Stop totalitarian madness” and “Fight against popular suspicion.” The topic of stadium security will be discussed at the Home Ministers’ Conference in December. Among other things, personalized tickets for football matches and tightening stadium ban guidelines are being discussed.
