By 2025, home insurance premiums will increase from 8% to 12%, according to a study by Meilleurtaux. “Especially because the “natural disaster” premium has increased while these disasters have increased”, explains Samuel Bansard, Meilleurtaux’s director of insurance activities.
This amount will fund the Paint Grout scheme, which should provide you with compensation when your property experiences flooding, earthquakes, landslides or other abnormal meteorological or geological events. Your city then submits a request for recognition of the natural disaster. If the State recognizes it, you can use your insurance.
Whether the request is accepted or not, it is published on Official Journal. We have analyzed all these decisions since 1995. It seems that cities are finding it increasingly difficult to get recognition for natural disasters. Like Nice and Montpellier, they are among the top 20 most requested cities. The city of Alpes-Maritimes has lamented droughts, floods, movements and landslides or powerful waves 87 times over the past thirty years. From 1995 to 2004, no requests were denied. Then, it was recognized only eight times out of ten between 2005 and 2014, and less than six times out of ten in the following decade.
In Montpellier, only three out of eight drought requests were accepted between 2005 and 2014. The deputy mayor responsible for protecting residents, Sébastien Cote, struggled to understand these rejections. “According to our analysis, such requests are rejected if the number of victims is too small. In 2022, three unknown disasters each affected less than four people. In the same year, requests regarding hazards that affected more than 40 people were validated”he reported.
