Poisoned family from Hamburg taken to hospital by ambulance. Video footage shows paramedics having to wait.
The death of the Hamburg family in Istanbul still raises questions. Turkish news agency Anadolu has now published video from surveillance cameras from the family’s hotel. The images show a dramatic scene: With the hotel doors locked, the father tried desperately to give rescue workers access to the hotel.
The video shows the father trying to open the door several times. He tries the key and tries to break the window with a potted plant. Sometimes she would stand at the door holding one of her children.
Rescue workers tried to help him from outside. Finally, the person holding the key came running into the street and unlocked the door. The receptionist was said to have locked up the hotel beforehand – perhaps to go out to eat.
The family of four died in Istanbul between November 13 and 17. On the 12th, all four were hospitalized with suspected food poisoning. First, the father, mother, five-year-old boy, and three-year-old girl were released. A few moments later they were taken to the hospital again.
Suspicion of food poisoning has not been confirmed. According to media reports, initial reports from forensic medicine concluded that pesticides were a greater cause of death; Pesticides against bedbugs were said to have been sprayed in a hotel room shortly before. Apparently it had entered the family’s bedroom from Hamburg through a vent in the bathroom.
Hotels in Fatih district were evacuated. Three other hotel visitors also required medical treatment – two of whom had similar symptoms to his family. As reported by Anadolu, the hotel owner and an employee were arrested.
