Fir from Thuringia: The winner of the Christmas tree casting travels to Berlin

It stands 16 meters tall, has won stiff competition and is spending its twilight years in front of one of Germany’s most famous landmarks: on Sömmerda in Thuringia, the Christmas tree for the Brandenburg Gate has been cut down. The spruce was loaded into a low loader in freezing temperatures with the help of a heavy-duty crane and now begins its journey Berlin as a spokesman for the Thuringian State Forest Service said.

Demand for the trees is high: “It’s a kind of casting. We look for suitable Christmas trees all year round,” the spokesperson continued. The important thing is that the cone shape is perfect, the branches reach to the ground and the needles are dense. Once this has been achieved, it is important that special vehicles can easily approach the tree.

This is the eleventh time the tree has been used for the Brandenburg Gate Thuringiasaid the spokesperson. “We are happy to bring joy to the people of Berlin and many guests.” The tree is scheduled to be installed in Berlin on Monday.
