Ukraine will soon hold talks in Switzerland with the United States to discuss Donald Trump’s plan to end the war with Russia, a senior Ukrainian official announced on Saturday.
“In the coming days, we will launch consultations in Switzerland between senior Ukrainian and American officials on possible parameters of a future peace agreement”said Roustem Oumerov, chairman of Ukraine’s Security Council, on Facebook.
“Ukraine is approaching this process with a clear understanding of its interests. This is a new stage in the dialogue that has been ongoing for several days and aims to align our vision of the next steps.he added.
President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday signed a decree creating a delegation that will be responsible for participating “for the negotiation process with the United States and Ukraine’s other international partners, as well as with Russian representatives.”
According to this decision, the delegation will be led by Volodymyr Zelensky’s right-hand man, presidential chief Andriï Iermak, and will include, among others, Roustem Umerov, head of the security and intelligence agencies, as well as the chief of staff. Or basically a military delegation.
On Friday, Volodymyr Zelensky rejected American plans to end the nearly four-year-old Russian invasion and assured that he would try to suggest alternative solutions to Washington. The text was viewed with concern in Kyiv because it included some of the main demands made by Russia.
The plan primarily includes surrendering territory by Ukraine and reducing the size of its army, but also offers Western security guarantees for Kyiv. If Kyiv’s European allies have already expressed their concerns about the proposal (Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer and Friedrich Merz meet this Saturday at the G20), Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are in turn pressuring Volodymyr Zelensky to accept the text. The American President thinks that he is “the plan must match Zelensky” while his Russian counterpart threatened further conquests if the plan was not accepted by Kyiv.
