Green Party conference at state level
Freitag and Rudow were elected as leaders of the state’s Green Party
Partial realignment of the Green Party leadership in Schleswig-Holstein: Lydia Rudow will be at Gazi Freitag’s side in the future. Together they must look to state elections in 2027.
The Green Party in Schleswig-Holstein has elected Lydia Rudow and Gazi Freitag as its leaders. Rudow received 94 of the 117 votes cast at the party conference in Neumünster. 16 members voted against it. 89 delegates voted on Friday, but 15 received no votes.
Anke Erdmann decided not to run again
The 35-year-old Rudow replaces Anke Erdmann, who is not seeking re-election. The outgoing co-chair is married to Kiel Mayor Ulf Kampf, who will run as the SPD’s main candidate against CDU Prime Minister Daniel Günther in the 2027 state election. Erdmann wants to avoid an election campaign within the family. Freitag has been chairman of the state’s Northern Green Party since 2022.
Rudow already has years of political experience. Among other things, he is the leader of the parliamentary group of the Green Party in the Kiel city council. So he doesn’t want to be state president, he said, and it’s not a comeback, either. In recent years, geography and physics teachers have concentrated on their work. Regarding his tenure, he announced: “I won’t let anyone take the butter off my bread so soon.”
Friday: Politics must strengthen society
Freitag advocates that as many people as possible participate in political decision making. The 45-year-old is turning his attention to state elections in 2027. Success has come not primarily from the state executive council, but rather from the party’s 8,500-member base in the northernmost federal state. Politics must be understandable and empower people, not just lecture them, he said.
