The ban for Luis Díaz after his red card in Paris was higher than expected. FC Bayern has now taken action against the ban.
FC Bayern Munich is not taking Luis Díaz’s Champions League ban for granted. The club have announced that they will take action against the decision. As CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen explained on Saturday, UEFA had “asked for reasons for the decision and then submitted an objection.” And further: “We will see if we succeed in reducing the sentence.”
Díaz was suspended for three matches after his red card in the match at Paris Saint-Germain (2-1). Bayern initially expected just a one-match suspension.
This assumption also emerged from UEFA’s initial letter. “The harsher punishment surprised us as much as everyone else, we didn’t expect it at all,” said Dreesen after the Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg (6:2). “Of course it was a serious foul, but it was not an attack, nor was it directed at the referee, nor was there any further offense after the foul. Such things have led to three-match suspensions in the past.”
However, the club does not have high hopes for success in front of UEFA. “We’re of the opinion that a three-game ban should not be done,” Dreesen said, “but realistically you have to say that you can only get away with it in rare cases.”
Sports director Max Eberl also sees the chances of reducing the suspension as very slim: “I’m not so naive as to say that it will only be one game. If we get one game less, then that would be fantastic. I think three games is very difficult.”
