“Giving France a budget is an obligation”

LA TRIBUNE SUNDAY – Deputies nearly unanimously rejected the “revenue” portion of the 2026 budget overnight Friday into Saturday. Have they given the key to the text to the Senate?
JEAN-FRANÇOIS HUSSON – If the deputies reject the manuscript, because after forty days the work is not satisfactory. This rejection allowed the Senate to start from an initial copy of the government, and it was much simpler. Starting a debate based on a very imperfect copy would force the Senate to scrutinize every step taken by the National Assembly.

After the issue of budget sincerity that you conveyed over the 2023-2024 period, does the executive copy seem reasonable to you?
Yes. In my opinion, elements of the framing are consistent with the country’s economic situation. Especially since we had a nice surprise in the third quarter with better than expected growth of +0.5%. Despite all this, I worry that budget uncertainty will make our economy less resilient and weaken the confidence of the French people.
