Dramatic scene in the morning: a young man takes out a knife at the police station. Even pepper spray couldn’t tame him – he climbed onto the guard’s desk.

In the Ruhr area, a 28-year-old man suffered serious injuries at a police station early Saturday morning. As police and prosecutors say, an officer shot the man with his service weapon.

According to police, the 28-year-old man appeared at the police station in the city of Hattingen with a population of 53,000 at around 05.10. There he suddenly took out a knife.

“Two police officers repeatedly asked him to put his knife away,” the officer said in a statement. Both threatened to use firearms and used pepper spray.

But the 28 year old player did not drop the knife. Instead of surrendering, the gunman climbed over the guard’s desk and approached the two officers. “One of them then used his service weapon and shot the 28-year-old man to stop the attack,” the police statement continued.

The 28-year-old man was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. According to the newspaper “Bild”, a bullet hit the attacker in the leg. The police officers remained unharmed.

It remains unclear why the man attacked officers with a knife. Based on initial investigations, police do not believe it was a targeted attack. According to “Bild”, the man is suspected of suffering from mental disorders.
