Newcastle United still lacks consistency this season, but still has enough to achieve big wins. Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw & Co. achieved unexpected success against Manchester City. Not even a minute’s interruption could change that.

Newcastle United have recorded surprising and respectable success in the Premier League. After two defeats, the team led by German international Nick Woltemade bounced back with a 2-1 (0-0) win against Manchester City, who have been in good form for weeks. The match winner was Harvey Barnes, who scored twice for the hosts. National player Malick Thiaw also impressed in the Magpies’ central defense.

In St. James’ Park, both teams played an entertaining attacking game with good chances on both sides. Strong Woltemade among other things missed a good opportunity. On Man City’s side, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden failed to take the lead, so the first half remained goalless. However, shortly after the break, things got important. Barnes gave Newcastle the lead in the 63rd minute after a superb one-two with Bruno Guimarães. Not long after, Rúben Dias (68) equalized for the visitors.

However, Newcastle were not impressed. Just two minutes later, Barnes scored (70′) to put the Magpies ahead again after Guimarães’ header hit the crossbar. After several minutes of VAR checks for a possible offside position, Woltemade et al were finally allowed to celebrate.

Man City failed in training for their Champions League clash with German runners-up Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday (9pm/DAZN and on live ticker on ntv.de). Pep Guardiola’s team is also one point behind leaders Arsenal FC at the moment and is now only in third place because Chelsea FC overtook Burnley FC with a 2-0 (1-0) win. The Gunners can increase their lead over City on Sunday (17.30/Sky) extended their lead to seven points with victory in the north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur. Newcastle, which is still looking for consistency this season, is still in 14th place.
