VfL Wolfsburg is experiencing a decline in sport and wants to reorganize its personnel. But Lower Saxony did not get a preferred candidate.
Struggling Bundesliga football team VfL Wolfsburg will not hire Andreas Schicker from league rivals TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as their new sporting director. Instead, the 39-year-old will now form the only leadership duo at Kraichgauer with Tim Jost. TSG announced this.
“I am flattered by the interest shown by other clubs – and at the same time it is a great confirmation of the work we do here at Kraichgau,” Schicker said in a statement: “But the shareholders of TSG have shown me a clear perspective on being able to continue working successfully here.” Schicker remains managing director of sports, he has held the position since October 2024. Jost has been managing director of marketing and sales since December 2024.
“Under his leadership, our team has found its way back to the ‘TSG DNA’ in terms of sport, the team is younger, the football has become more exciting and successful. We hope that Andreas Schicker will continue to play a major role in shaping this path for a long time to come,” said TSG partner Dietmar Hopp.
At league rival Wolfsburg, the sports director position needs to be filled. The VW club initially parted ways with Dutch coach Paul Simonis and shortly after with sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz. Sports director Peter Christiansen was also the target of criticism and was held responsible, among other things, for undesirable developments in the sport.
Schicker’s rejection means a bitter setback for the VW club who have dropped to 15th. Supervisory board boss Sebastian Rudolph traveled to Kraichgau for a week to negotiate with Hopp. Schicker is said to be very interested in moving to Wolfsburg. Now the search for a new sporting director at VfL begins again.
“We had several candidates on the shortlist when looking for a new sporting director – Andreas Schicker was one of them. We had good discussions with him and TSG Hoffenheim. We respect the club’s decision not to let him go,” the club said in a statement.
