Zoff Asylum: Merz allowed to deport Somalis to Poland – but only one | policy

Berlin/Warsaw – Well, that’s how you treat your neighbors! The mood between Berlin and Warsaw was frosty for a long time – there were disagreements mainly over the tightening of border controls under the government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU). But immediately before the German-Polish government consultations on December 1, there was a conciliatory tone.

From Poland There is even a special gesture of goodwill: According to BILD information, the Polish asylum authorities want to accept one of the three known Somali refugees, as stipulated in the European Union’s Dublin Regulation. A symbolic concession after the men were turned away several times at the border, but all three (two men, one woman) ultimately accepted jurisdictional proceedings in Germany (BILD reported several times).

Deportation has been ordered

Federal Ministry of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (55, CSU) confirmed to BILD: “In the Dublin procedure for one of the two Somali male applicants, the Polish asylum authorities approved the German takeover request in October 2025.”

This means: Germany can repatriate Somali refugees to Poland. His asylum application was rejected as inadmissible by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) – deportation has been ordered.

The state of Berlin is responsible for its implementation. However, people there remain careful. When BILD asked, the State Immigration Office said it could not provide any information for confidentiality reasons.

In two other cases, Warsaw continued to show resilience: the Polish side refused to take over two other Somali refugees – German protests (against the authorities’ decision) were also unsuccessful. The Interior Ministry said simply: “Poland rejects the protest against the rejection of the takeover request.”

Foreign politician Knut Abraham (59, CDU), coordinator of German-Polish relations, welcomed Poland’s concessions: “More than that!” he told BILD. “This is a good sign and underlines the importance of successful cooperation between Germany and Poland – even in difficult areas such as migration.”
