In Gaza, delay in implementation of American peace plan “gives Hamas a means to regain control” – Libération

Professor at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations, sociologist Laetitia Bucaille has just published it Gaza, what future? in Stock, where he examines two possible paths for the Palestinian enclave following the agreement between Hamas and Israel: plunge into war, or eventually withdraw from it to establish true peace.

Your book was published when news of a ceasefire in Gaza was being widely discussed, did you anticipate this?

After the period of astonishment caused by the massacre of October 7 and the prolonged war Israel waged on Gaza, it felt necessary to escape from this state, try to understand, do research and write. Questions about violence, and the mechanisms that lead to violence, are important to me. Whether a society condones brutality and cruelty has always been an enigma, even if it is repeated again and again in the Middle East and elsewhere. To try to explain these processes, on-the-ground investigations are necessary and for the first time, many Israelis and Palestinians I met showed themselves incapable of considering the suffering and injustice suffered by others, their own pain and suffering overshadowing everything else. The aim of this research is also to explore possible scenarios towards forms of appeasement or containment in violence, the path launched in this book is also not appropriate.
