Air raid on the capital
Israel attacks Hezbollah leader in Beirut
Despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, there were other targeted attacks in Beirut. The target was said to be a high-ranking Lebanese militia official.
Israeli soldiers say they have attacked a senior Hezbollah member in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. A military statement referred to “targeted strikes against prominent Hezbollah terrorists in Beirut.” According to Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese television channel Al-Majadin, at least one person was killed and three others injured in the attack on an apartment.
Lebanese news agency NNA reported that the attack in Haret Hreik, a southern suburb of Beirut, also caused extensive damage to nearby buildings and cars on the road.
Israeli media reported that the target of the attack was Hezbollah leader Haitham Ali Tabatabai. They are “number two” in the Hezbollah militia. Initially there was no official confirmation regarding this. The US offered a reward for his capture in 2018.
Israel and Iran-backed militias agreed to a ceasefire in November 2024 after more than a year of exchanging fire. However, the Israeli military repeatedly attacked targets in Lebanon. Both parties accused each other of violating the agreement.
In September last year, the Israeli Air Force killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. The attack also occurred in Haret Hreik, a suburb of Beirut.
In January 2024, the second most senior overseas leader of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas, Saleh al-Aruri, was killed in an explosion in Beirut. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the death of the deputy head of Hamas’ political bureau.
