“Forty-five years have passed since then dramatic November 23, 1980 where a powerful seismic shock hit Irpinia, Basilicata and several regions of Puglia, causing the death of around three thousand people, thousands of people injured and homeless, millions of citizens in need of assistance. Responses to disasters carried out by institutions and civil society, of the many volunteers who, moved by a deep spirit of participation and solidarity, came to the aid of the local population, they were a demanding and generous people. A difficult page in our history that is still printed in the collective memory, a constant reminder of the need to adapt monitoring systems and immediate reactions to the vulnerability experienced by parts of the Italian territory and at the same time spur the search for adequate anti-seismic solutions for the reconstruction that is also the relaunch of the internal territories of our country. The Republic commemorates the victims and condoles with their families.” The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, underlined this in a statement issued by Quirinale.
