Jair Bolsonaro and his soldering iron have had a setback

IAround midnight, on the night of November 21-22, Jair Bolsonaro took a soldering iron and began to disassemble his electronic bracelet. Willingness to flee or paranoid delirium as he claims? Brazil’s former president, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison in September for an attempted coup, initially assured that he acted “out of curiosity”, simply wanting to “see how” the bracelet was “made inside”. This explanation is very superficial and contrasts with the seriousness of his actions and the resulting consequences: his immediate imprisonment was precipitated by his own son’s disastrous initiative.

By holding a memorial in front of his father’s house on the evening of November 22, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro actually gave Brazilian Federal Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes the perfect excuse to order preventive detention. Flávio said he called his supporters “for freedom.” However, this initiative cost his father his rights. “The summons turns house arrest into prison detention,” wrote Brazilian columnist Leonardo Sakamoto.

Defense strategy or psychological collapse?

During his custody hearing, Bolsonaro, instead of mentioning his “curiosity”, preferred to talk about “paranoia” and “hallucinations”. The man who led Brazil three years ago now admits that he suffered from a psychological disorder that prompted him to take this action. This belated revelation raises the question: is this a defensive strategy or a real psychological disorder? And to what extent did the family circle, which was supposed to protect him, contribute to his downfall?

The medical details Bolsonaro provided reinforced the ambiguity of his condition. He reported taking pregabalin, a drug used to treat anxiety and neuropathic pain, as well as sertraline, an antidepressant often prescribed for anxiety disorders and depression. This treatment suggests a pre-existing mental fragility, but its mention comes at a time when Bolsonaro must justify his behavior in court. The former president also showed three health certificates dated November 15, four days before the incident. Between the technical explanations, the almost childish explanations of “curiosity” and the onset of paranoia, there is either awkward improvisation in his defense or real mental confusion.

Escape scenario

“Even though the summoning of the protesters was disguised as a ‘precaution’ for the health of the defendant Jair Messias Bolsonaro, this action shows a repetition of the modus operandi of the criminal organization led by the defendant, in the sense of the use of criminal action. According to him, “the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son” could have helped “guarantee the success of his escape.”

However, the former president’s background worked against him. In February 2024, amidst legal matters, he was interned for two days at the Hungarian embassy in Brasilia. A draft of his asylum application in Argentina was found on his phone. Recently, one of his relatives, federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem, fled to Florida.

“And, once again, Bolsonaro is suffering because of the crazy plans created or implemented by his sons,” said Leonardo Sakamoto ironically. After Eduardo, who worsened his father’s situation by moving to the United States to encourage Donald Trump to sanction Brazil, it was Flávio’s turn to trigger the arrest.

Rather than protecting their father, Bolsonaro’s sons appear to have been the arsonists who led to his downfall. Because the former leader has not yet been jailed for carrying out his sentence, the deadline for his defense appeal is still pending. The arrests are not expected to occur until the following week. Flávio Bolsonaro therefore squandered this opportunity. Currently, Jair Bolsonaro is being held in an individual cell equipped with air conditioning, television and a mini refrigerator. He’s had plenty of time to reflect on his attitude, like a former president fiddling with an electronic bracelet in the middle of the night with a soldering iron.
