The meeting between New York Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and US President Donald Trump was peaceful. Mamdani previously called Trump a fascist – and continued to do the same afterward.
After their peaceful meeting at the White House, New York Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani reiterated that he continues to view US President Donald Trump as a fascist. “This is something I have said in the past and I am saying it today,” Mamdani stressed on NBC News, Sunday. What was appreciated from the conversation with the President was that they were not afraid to address these differences of opinion.
Mamdani called the meeting with the president “productive, one that again addressed the key issues of our campaign: housing costs, child care, food,” and more.
Trump pledged his support to the left-wing Democratic Party politician after the meeting on Friday. “We will help him realize everyone’s dream: to have a strong and safe New York.” Trump said he agreed with the 34-year-old on more things than he thought. He will support Mamdani to be a “great mayor”.
During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly insulted Mamdani as a “communist” and threatened to deport him. He also wants to withdraw federal funding from New York if Mamdani is elected. Mamdani promises rent control, free buses and child care. He wants to finance this through higher taxes on the rich and corporations.
Mamdani won the mayoral election on November 4 with a clear lead. He will replace city leader Eric Adams on January 1. Ugandan-born Mamdani is the first Muslim to hold the post.
