Sadapt to threats. The establishment of voluntary military service in France has been under study for several months, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, reports Tribune Sunday 23 November. The head of state can officially announce this this Thursday. Last July, he spoke of his desire to give “a new direction to the younger generation to serve in our armed forces,” he recalled Western France.

The upcoming announcement is in line with statements by the Chief of Staff, General Fabien Mandon, who told mayors on November 18 that France must “accept the loss of its children”. The comments were made in reaction to the return of war in Europe with the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the reintroduction of military conscription in certain countries that have a particular affinity with Russia.

“If we really want to be safe, we must prevent other countries from coming (…) France must continue to be a strong country with a strong army but also have the capacity for collective recovery,” said Emmanuel Macron in Johannesburg (South Africa), on the sidelines of the G20.

According to some French media, this military service will be open to every adult individual, with an allocation of ECTS credits that can be increased during higher education, for those who undertake it. A salary of between 900 and 1,000 euros per month will also be part of the equation. Ultimately, the goal is to attract between 10,000 and 50,000 youth annually, and 3,000 at the first practice.

However, details regarding the establishment of such military service must be provided, especially the modalities and costs. The question, which was not answered clearly by Minister of the Armed Forces Alice Rufo, only confirmed that there was “work in this direction”.
