Former British Prime Minister David Cameron has been treated for cancer. The politician was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he told British newspaper The Times. The treatment was successful.

The former head of the conservative government was reportedly urged by his wife Samantha to get checked about a year ago after the two heard radio reports about the disease.

After several tests, a biopsy confirmed the disease. “You always dread hearing those words,” Cameron said of the moment he received his diagnosis. “And then when the words come out of the doctor’s mouth, you think, ‘Oh no, he’s going to say it. He’s going to say it. Oh my God, he said it,'” Cameron said.

Cameron recommends precautionary measures

Cameron was Prime Minister and then Foreign Minister in former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government from 2010 to 2016. He actually “didn’t really like talking” about such intimate topics, he told the Times. However, he wants to use his voice to advocate for targeted screening for high-risk men.

According to the BBC, prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men in the UK. According to the broadcaster, there is currently no screening program for prostate cancer in the UK due to concerns about the accuracy of PSA tests. Such tests determine the concentration of prostate-specific antigen in the blood, but their significance is limited and false-positive results also occur. Cameron also underwent a PSA test.
