They crawl through small cracks, hide in corners and smell an unpleasant odor: stink bugs. Anyone who finds them in their home should not just be disgusted, as the insects can indicate a costly problem.
Why are so many bed bugs appearing now
As soon as the temperature outside drops, the animals seek shelter – warm, dry, and, if possible, indoors. This is what makes apartments and houses ideal winter residences BOOK MY HOME (also owned by Axel Springer) has reported. According to that German Nature Conservation Association (NABU), there are now almost 1000 species of bed bugs in this country. The reason is climate change. More and more species native to the Mediterranean are also spreading in Germany due to milder winters.
Green stink bugs and gray garden bugs are very common. From May onwards, females lay up to 450 eggs per animal. At the latest in autumn, young animals begin to seek shelter. They often end up in the living room.
There’s no reason to panic – but to take action
Even though they are a disgusting sight, bed bugs are not dangerous. They do not bite, transmit disease, or damage furniture or food. But their name is not a coincidence, because when threatened, they secrete a liquid that has a strong smell.
This is how you recognize animals
The green stink bug (Palomena prasina) is the best known species. Its shell glows green in summer and turns brown in autumn for perfect camouflage. At 12 to 14 millimeters long, they are small but striking. In spring, the shell turns green again for natural protection from predators.
How bedbugs get into the apartment
These animals take advantage of the smallest leaks to get into the house, such as window frames, roof areas, or roller shutter boxes. The problem is that heat also escapes from where the bugs enter. This is bad for energy balance.
Experts advise sealing all possible entry points with putty or sealing materials. This not only prevents crawlers from entering, but also saves heating costs.
Just don’t destroy it!
Many people make the mistake of crushing or sucking the animal. Both create a strong odor, both indoors and in the vacuum cleaner bag.
It is better to put a glass on top of the animal, carefully shift the paper under it and place it outside. A hand brush also helps remove insects. If you react quickly, you can prevent the offspring from hiding in the apartment.
This keeps the apartment free from insects
Prevention is the best method. Keep windows and doors closed or secure them with tight-fitting window coverings. And when it shows at night: the lights go out! Because brightness magically attracts stinkers.
