Delicious food, good music, pleasant guests – that’s not the only thing that makes a Christmas party a success, as a recent survey shows.

For many people in Germany, Christmas celebrations are part of the time leading up to Christmas. But demand for the celebrations is declining, a YouGov survey of 1,000 people showed.

Nearly two-thirds (64.7 percent) celebrate Christmas parties two to three times a year with family and friends and work colleagues. But a quarter (26 percent) only once. A small majority (9.3 percent) were satisfied with the celebrations: for them the celebrations should be more than four times.

Those who celebrate with friends or family prefer to do it at home or at the homes of friends or family. However, a quarter (27 percent) prefer to go to a restaurant. However, with this answer choice it is not clear whether it only applies to company events or also family gatherings. The same goes for celebrations at Christmas markets, which one in ten people consider good.

Regardless of location, what was most important to those surveyed was the quality of the food and drink, followed by location and a pleasant atmosphere. The balanced price-performance ratio is in third place. However, this only applies to cases where the respondent has to pay for his own food.

What can ruin an evening is obvious: dissatisfied guests, music that is too loud, and long wait times for food or drinks. On the other hand, a Christmas party where the atmosphere is good, the guests are well-behaved, and the atmosphere is relaxed can score points.

What constitutes appropriate behavior of course depends on the location and circle in which the party takes place. At company parties and in restaurants, quieter guests tend to come out on top. Of course, things can be more relaxed and open with family.

In any case, experts recommend:

Backbiting and gossip as well as political and religious discussions are also taboo. Flirting and “kissing attacks” should also be avoided.

The survey was conducted online by market research service YouGov between 30 October and 1 November 2025. The client was payment services provider Lightspeed. 599 women and 401 men aged 18 years and over took part. The average age of participants was 41.3 years.
