An accident that could have turned into a tragedy. A man in his twenties was injured by a hunter’s shot in Vaison-la-Romaine (Vaucluse), Ici Vaucluse learned on Sunday. The young man was jogging when his knee was injured by gunfire in a forest area.

The hunter, described by the Carpentras prosecutor’s office as a “shooter who respects instructions”, took part in a wild boar hunt, which involved around fifteen practitioners. The prosecutor pointed out to Ici that the hunting plan, security of the premises and handling of weapons were respected a priori by the group.

According to the Saint Hubert des Voconces hunting community, which organized this hunt, this is the first time an incident like this has occurred.

Asked by our colleagues, the running club in the town located 50 km from Avignon maintains “good relations” with hunters, but assures that they will remind runners to wear bright colors and change direction, when they encounter a “Fight in progress” sign.

11 hunters victims of hunting accidents

For Alain Briançon, president of the Vaucluse hunting federation, this was a “regrettable accident”, he told Here. According to him, 700 hunt leaders have been trained at the department and 62% of Vaucluse’s 9,000 hunters have taken the training.

This unfortunate accident occurred a few days before a national campaign organized by the French Office of Biodiversity (OFB) regarding safety regulations regarding hunting. During the 2024-2025 season, 11 people died in hunting accidents, according to the OFB report. All of them are hunters.
