For social services – and for the L’Aquila juvenile court – the school diplomas provided by the parents of children removed from their families in the Palmoli forest, in the province of Chieti, are insufficient. However, according to the Ministry of Education and Honors, compulsory education is “regularly completed through home education authorized by the Constitution and applicable laws and through the support of authorized schools”. The ministry itself conveyed this in an official note, underlining that “confirmation came from the principal of the relevant school through the regional school office”. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice yesterday began an investigation into the actions of the judges. The Ministry’s office liaises with the courts from which they request all documentation – consisting of orders, briefs and reports – relating to the proceedings. At the end of the investigation, the inspectorate will send a report to Minister Carlo Nordio containing an opinion on dismissal, further investigation or possible sanctions.

ACTION

For now the definite fact – they say from the Ministry of Education – is that Nathan and Catherine, who have chosen parental education for their three children, have a good reputation from an academic point of view, among those underlined in the juvenile court order ordering the dismissal and also in the report of the social services which, last July, wrote: «A family unit at risk of serious social marginalization, in housing difficulties without frequent social interaction or a fixed income, with minor children who do not attend school and engage in recreational or sporting activities”. At school On the side another, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini stepped in and commented on a note from the ministry led by Giuseppe Valditara on social media: «Another fake news debunked, another reason for children to return as soon as possible to their homes in the forest to grow in peace, study, smile and play». Salvini wrote on social media. “Some public statements go beyond legitimate criticism of judicial actions and end up directly affecting the work of judges in juvenile courts, exposing them to undue media pressure,” reads the practice to protect judges, put forward by the CSM.

MOBILIZATION

Clashes between the majority and the judiciary are still high. League MEP Susanna Ceccardi announced that she had submitted a “priority question to the European Commission”, while the Abruzzo League is preparing to collect signatures in the largest centers in the Region for the weekend. And although the Municipal Government of Palmoli, with Mayor Giuseppe Masciulli, said it was ready to work with the Court to encourage family reunification, the private sector also made its contribution. In particular, two entrepreneurs in the area have decided to offer ready-made housing modules to the family free of charge, with housing conditions respecting the costs required by the court. The project includes functional spaces, water and energy connections, as well as the possibility of quick setup, so as not to interfere with the couple’s lifestyle choices. Both entrepreneurs stated that they would like to personally follow the implementation of this module and make this intervention an example of collaboration between citizens, institutions and private entities. Nathan, on the other hand, remained silent: “I’m not making any more statements.” The decision was taken after a meeting of the neo-rural group of which he was a member: about thirty families living between Palmoli, Tufillo and San Buono followed the same lifestyle as the man and his wife.
